Fatherhood – Children View the World Through Their Fathers

eratosthenes_photo-5c8d7bcc46e0fb00016ee0b8At a movie theater, a little girl had difficulty seeing the movie screen. She pointed to the man in front of her and whispered, “Mommy, I can’t see through that man.”

A nine-year-old boy asked his father a geography question while the room was full of a group of PTA parents. The father was embarrassed because he could not answer the question. No one knew that this incident shut down that dad, and the window through which his children view the world was closed.

Can your children see through you? Children see the world through your eyes. They have a view of the vast universe through your transparency. However, if that window closes because dad is absent, emotionally or physically, or because he has been embarrassed, you lose your superman status. I have taken a survey and dads agree: dads start to lose their wisdom at about the child’s age ten or eleven and they don’t regain it until the kids have a child of their own. By the time a dad has been put down a few times, depending on his relationship with his own dad, deep wounds of self-esteem start to become too painful. Often fathers cannot risk being upstaged by his own children therefore, he clams up father of geography.

It could be a sport that he boy enjoys, but that dad was not very good at when he was young, or maybe the child wants to play clarinet, whereas the dad was a basketball buff. Whatever it is, it can cause a rift that only time and maturity will heal. Fathers and feel put down, even if the child did not really mean it that way, and the transparency window is closed. The child can no longer see through dad to the world outside. If that window stays closed, dad will be put aside and the child starts to seek a window to the world somewhere else. Guess where he goes. You’re right! He goes to his friends. Her peers, whose dads have also recently become stupid, become her new view of the world.

At first glance, this might seem trivial but look again. This is where youth in the western countries is much different from in eastern cultures. The independent attitudes of teens in the USA, Great Britain, and Germany for instance can be rebellious, angry and hungry for affection and acceptance. That is why many kids band together to make new heroes out of shirtless, long-haired, dirty, drug-logged rock stars. It makes sense. That is the farthest they can get from hard working, stone-hearted dad, who has gone to the garage to ease his own pain, to experience his own kind of rebellion.

Many men and women go through life emotionally looking for their missing father, desperately seeking dad! Even if dad is at home, he often is not emotionally involved in the child’s life. Men, in general have only recently begun to play an active role in the child-rearing part of home life. Dads march off to work as they have marched off to war, and come home tired and beaten. Budding young men and women, needing the dad God intended, tromp around the house looking for a father’s blessing like searching for a lost toy. Dad is nearby, but oblivious. The hole in his heart is just as big as the one his child is beginning to experience. He never got a blessing from his dad, so he has none to give. He knows something is missing, but he does not know what it is. He reaches for his hip pocket and offers what society has demanded he master in. However, material things, without father’s blessing, without his love, without the transparency that every child (boy or girl) desperately needs, are ungratefully consumed. The dad window is closed. Yet work-robot, oblivious dad continues to provide more of what the child needs least. All through the children’s growing years, they have been prevented from seeing life through the man intended to be their window to the world. They go out looking for love in all the wrong places. Life for most boys and for many grown men and women is a frustrating search for their lost father who did not give them protection, provision, nurture or a role model.

The New Bubble – An Exciting Future in Capital Markets and the Role of National Economies

components2bof2bcapital2bmarket-minIn these volatile yet exciting times in the capital market, there is room to be optimistic.

According to Dirk Notheis, Head of Germany and Austria and chairman of the board at Morgan Stanley Bank AG, “the importance of the capital market will significantly increase. The financial crisis has accelerated this trend. The role of investment banks is to introduce financial entrepreneurs into the new world, which applies to both new instruments of finance as well as new groups of investors.”

Of utmost importance is today’s diversity in the field of investors. There is no choice but for investors to leave traditional rating instruments behind and take on companies with certain risk factors. At the end of the day, those companies usually aren’t such bad companies to support and can be expected to return nice profits capital market instruments.

Spending Policies of National Economies
Following the bursting of the financial bubble that the world has been experiencing, the next financial risk may very well be the “national” bubble.

Dirk Notheis states, “Worldwide, many countries have been living beyond their means. The crisis that we are experiencing in Greece is a phenomenon that reaches far beyond the Mediterranean.”

As the head of Morgan Stanley AG, Dirk Notheis is fearful of the upward trend of new debt in many countries of the world. This debt and deficit has been gradually increasing in many European countries during recent years, but most notably in Greece. It is important for Greece to get its budget in focus, as other problematic economies, such as Portugal, Spain and Italy, have done.

The fiscal situation in Japan, Britain, and the United States has also been hit, making it more important than ever to reduce spending and get national budgets under control.

Investors won’t be so quick to step up to the plate as far as baling out failing national economies, as was seen in the recent case of Portugal. It is just too expensive for a country to borrow money on high capital. The government bond that was created was decreased to a lesser volume of 300 million Euros rather than the sum of 500 million Euros. It is possible to say that there will be international scenarios of failing economies that will receive no money from today’s market. Even if those countries do receive funds, it is an expensive solution that often times exacerbates the problem.

Dirk Notheis warns, “The air is very thin for many, practically zero, and the scope for active policy making is shrinking due to the expenditure of the past.” However, the consolidation of national budgets will breathe life into the world economy.

Returning Trust to the World Financial Markets
The world’s economy will gain new life through fiscal consolidation. In order to avoid a massive crisis in confidence, which could snowball into consequences that are totally unpredictable, it is mandatory that we get our budgets under control in a timely fashion. It would be wise to concentrate on the vital issue of fiscal consolidation in the next G20 summit. As far as the Euro goes, it is strong enough to survive this current crisis.

Open Markets
The German market is wide open now, especially to the large number of family businesses and to investors, both local and global, seeking optimum returns. This is a welcome change and, along with that, the market seems to have reached a psychological turning point where there is a new and refreshing willingness to open up to the capital market in an external and transparent way.

Morgan Stanley AG has responded to the requirements of the many medium-size businesses in Germany by creating a special team specifically geared to the needs of that clientele. Although this is only one step towards supporting that sector, we are keeping the ball moving for investors and businesses.

The Role of Regional Banks
In order to generate a steady flow of income and provide a more profitable work environment, leading to bigger and better business opportunities, it is vital that companies maintain a position of being cash positive.

More than 20 percent of the loans come from regional banks, which have been going through an especially difficult period. While they are concerned primarily for themselves, their market share will shrink. In short, each bank must find its own way. Naturally, this will restrict the overall supply of credit, forcing companies to seek alternative avenues of funding. This is where the capital market will fit in nicely.

The Financial Market Stabilization Fund, which is due to expire in January, is as important now as ever before and the duration of the fund should be amended and extended. The opportunity for organized and systematic reduction of securities deemed toxic and businesses that fall into the non-strategic category should not only be aimed towards regional and private banks.

New Investment Opportunities
Germany has been very active in the mergers and acquisitions market as well as in equity transactions in the past year. This put us in a position of being able to weather the changes and adjust to the new environment quite well. It appears that in the coming year Germany should see around twelve initial public offerings, and secure a volume in the 200 million Euro range from the highest quality segment of the commercial market, the Prime Standard.

Private equity firms and strategists will see opportunities present themselves as holding companies start selling off portions of their portfolio companies. These are companies that did well during the 2005 to 2007 heyday, but now need to recoup their capital.

Commodities Market
China continues to exert a strong demand for raw materials, and this only continues the trends we noticed in previous commodity prices. Raw materials will continue to be sought after, but that does not necessarily translate as a financial crisis commodity.

Financial Market Bubble
In short, there are many countries that are tittering on the brink of financial collapse. With the situation where interest and principal have taken on outstanding proportions, it is more important than ever that we push forward the importance of fiscal consolidation. This is true for every country on the face of the earth, Germany included. For the sake of a healthy world economy, initiating a system of financial discipline must be of vital concern to everyone.

Public Debate – Foundational Pillar of Democracy

pillars_of_democracy

Public debate is a constructive discussion on a matter of mutual importance. Citizens express their views on a problem and try to reach a consensus acceptable to most, if not all participants. Positives and negatives of possible solutions are discussed and efforts are made to pick up one which is deemed the best.

Constructive public debate is the foundation pillar of democracy. It churns the public opinion to produce a consensus about an issue confronting the society or nation at large. Democratic societies are expected to dig out solutions through public debate. This is something where a democratically cultured society differs from an autocratic society.

Some people confuse debate with argument. However, a public debate is just a constructive discussion on a subject of mutual importance. People express their individual views about a problem; discuss the pros and cons of possible solutions, and try to reach a conclusion which is collectively acceptable. It is not about a group with particular thoughts thrusting themselves on the others. It is a concerted effort to find a path where all associated can tread together 4 pillars of democracy.

A society debates an issue at several levels. People could gather in a public meeting in large numbers and listen to the speakers’ address on an issue. A smaller group could assemble to discuss things in a room or hall. A bunch of citizens could spontaneously begin discussing a subject at the local grocery shop or store. A citizen might watch a social debate program on television and find a particular participant’s views impressive. All these activities collectively make a public debate.

Communication on political and social issues has been a component of human interaction since the dawn of civilization. Ceremonial and religious expression, informal discussions and forums to discuss daily life are various forms of public debate. To disagree with each other on political and social matters is inherent and debates help take a middle path. The objective of public debate is to find a mutually agreeable solution to a problem or suggestion to improve quality of life.

With the advent of Internet technology, new platforms for public debates have emerged. People can now express themselves on online platforms. They can propagate their thoughts on the social media, blogs and debate forums. Some institutions of higher learning have introduced their forum platforms to enable people to voice themselves and discuss issues with some of the best minds in the field. One can join the people with high learning to ascertain solutions of issues that plague our society.

The biggest advantage of online debate platforms is that the people can express themselves without feeling any kind of pressure. It is their message which people view, not them. So they can post what they exactly feel. This is where the Internet scores over the conventional platforms of debate. People who are hesitant to speak publicly get a powerful medium to express themselves and positively contribute in opinion formation.

Email Address Tips – The Difference Between CC and BCC

icon-1539884247-5bc8c4d7b9f0cEmail is pretty straight forward. You type what you want to send, add the address of the person you wish to receive your message, and then you click the send button. In a matter of seconds, that person can then click on that message in their inbox and read what you have to say. There are other features on email however, that can be both extremely useful and also very dangerous. You should be sure you know how to use these features, especially the BCC and CC options.

Some people make huge mistakes when sending out emails. These could be business related, but they can also be about personal matters as well. There are times when people choose to send out mass emails. These are going to more than one person. The mistake some make is made when they reply to that email with something less than favorable to say. Instead of hitting the ‘reply’ button, they hit the ‘reply all’ button. When they do that, what they have to say goes to everyone on the list rather than just the sender. Almost everyone makes this mistake at least once.

CC on email is much like CC on business letter communications. This means carbon copy. When you add email addresses to this field in your email, you are sending a carbon copy of that email to each address. These addresses are going to be visible to everyone that gets the email. If you sent an email to your boss, his or her boss, and the company accountant, each will know that. Keep that in mind when you use this useful function.

BCC is not quite the same. This is something that does the same thing but does not work in the same way. You can add email addresses to this field and each will get a copy of that email difference between cc and bcc.

However, the difference with BCC (blind carbon copy) is that the people getting the email will not see the addresses of those other recipients. This can be used when you need to know someone has seen what you have sent, but you don’t want the person getting that email to know it. It is also used to protect the privacy of email addresses so that they are not presented to others who have no business having them.
