From both the sides it is bordered with 21 elongated earthen dykes that are made of stone. A long drive on the these offers an pleasing experience of the serenity and luring natural surroundings. It was initially built for the purpose of irrigation and flood control with the storage capacity of 5818 m. Construction of the dam led to the creation of a spectacular lake which extends up to the 55 km behind the lake. Extending to the total area of 743 sq km., it form the biggest artificial lake in Asia. Gandhi Minar located on the top of the dam offers the exotic view of the gorgeous Hirakud dam and its marvelous tranquil waters.

In order to control the flow of water of the dam Hydraulic intake gate are made available for each contrivance. The dam provides 1,55,635 hectares of Kharif and 1,08,385 hectares of Rabi irrigation in the districts of Sambalpur, Bolangir, Subarnapur and Bargarh. The Hirakud Dam project also facilitates flood protection to 9500 sq km of delta in Puri and Cuttak districts. The amount of expenditure and material used in the construction of this dam is sufficient to make a road from Kanyakumari to Kashmir or Amritsar to Dibrogarh in Assam.
